Emmy Award-winning comedian, producer, writer and actor Larry Wilmore will be among the honorees at Loyola Marymount University’s African American Alumni Association 14th annual scholarship fundraiser. The Soul Train-themed event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Cooper Design Space, 860 S. Los Angeles St., Los Angeles.
KJLH 102.3, DJ Kevin Nash will be the master of ceremonies and the evening will feature a special performance by singer and actress V. Bozeman.
Wilmore is the former host of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” and “Senior Black Correspondent” on “The Daily Show.” He was also the creator of “The Bernie Mac Show,” and co-creator of “The PJs.” He previously served as executive producer of “Black-ish” on ABC Network and is a co-creator of the HBO comedy “Insecure.” He will receive the William A. Strickland Excellence Award for his contributions to entertainment.
Other awardees include: Broadway Federal Bank, receiving the association’s Legacy Award – CEO and president, Wayne-Kent Bradshaw, will accept; and Lecia Brooks ’78, outreach director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who will receive the Hon. Irma Brown Dillon Community Service Award.
These awards mark the association’s commitment to academic excellence and the spirit of community service. About 6 percent of LMU’s student body is African-American and the university has been cited by the prestigious Education Trust as one of the most successful universities at graduating African-American students. Proceeds from the AAAA Soul Train Soiree will go toward scholarships for deserving students. In the past 14 years LMU’s AAAA has awarded more than 400 scholarships and raised nearly $2 million in scholarship support. This year AAAA has awarded 85 scholarships.
