For 100 years members of the California Province of the Society of Jesus have built schools and parishes, and created social justice ministries to serve the state’s communities. The keynote address will be given by Barbara Busse, dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts at Loyola Marymount University.
To commemorate this century of service, the California Jesuits will hold a two-day centennial celebration on Aug. 7 and 8 at Santa Clara University.
The theme of the celebration is, “Responding to the Call of Christ: 100 Years and Beyond.” Busse, who has held leadership roles in the California Province for several years, will discuss the significant contributions made by the province to the people of California and the challenges the province faces.
“We have seen advances in technology, communication and education that have literally changed the world in the past hundred years. We now have the opportunity to influence people far beyond this region,” said Busse.
The California Province was established in 1909 and today sponsors Loyola Marymount University, Santa Clara University and the University of San Francisco. The Jesuits also support 16 primary and secondary schools, 12 parishes, three retreat/spirituality centers, numerous social ministries, as well as contribute to 21 Jesuit missionaries serving in 12 countries.
Jon Fuller, S.J., physician and a member of the clinical staff of the Center for HIV/AIDS Care and Research at Boston Medical Center, will also be a featured speaker.
