Jane Brucker, professor of studio arts at LMU, is one of five recipients of the City of Los Angeles Independent Master Artist Project (COLA IMAP) grants in design and visual arts. COLA IMAP is an internationally recognized career artist’s award and grant presented by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. COLA IMAP is awarded to creative artists who dedicate themselves to an ongoing body of excellent work, represent a relevant progression through their pieces or series, exemplify generation of core ideas in their field, garner respect from their peers, and serve as role models for other artists.
Each COLA IMAP grant recipient was peer-reviewed within a non-thematic selection process. After selection, each awardee was granted $10,000 to create new work for the group exhibition. An essay about Brucker’s work appears in the COLA 24 exhibition catalogue and an interview with Brucker in a produced Gallery Guide is available online and at the gallery venue.
“Brucker’s artworks are quiet mementos to lost time, reconceived for intimate contemplation in the here and now. They invoke the shadows of things past, reminding us that lives and identities are built on shifting ground in a constantly changing world.”
Dr. Claudia Bohn-Spector, writer and art historian
Brucker’s COLA exhibition prompts us to pause and reflect on the ambiguities of health, safety and viewpoint that complicate the acts of peaceful rest. In each of her works, Brucker uses materials that she has made or gathered including objects inherited from her own family to reflect on the vulnerability of our minds and bodies. Her performance work can be solo or collaborative and builds on experiences of reflection and contemplation inherent to her ongoing work.
Brucker’s past work has been featured at venues throughout the United States and internationally, in Nepal, Germany, Scotland, France, Japan, Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Time spent alone as an artist-in-residence at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop Winter Residency in Darkness and Isolation; DRAWinternational in Caylus, France; and Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow, Germany contributed to her ongoing interest in contemplation.
