James M. Crum ’81, LMU Education Serves Alumnus Well in Washington, D.C.

James M. Crum ’81 comes from a long line of Loyola Marymount University alumni, including: his father, uncle and sister. He met his wife, Luz, at LMU. Their daughter graduated from LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts in 2007. Crum, whose degree is in civil engineering, is a vice president for Van Scoyoc Associates in Washington, D.C., helping clients navigate the complex federal infrastructure programs and to position themselves to be eligible for program funding. Before joining Van Scoyoc Associates, Crum was director of the Project and Contracting Office for the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C. His duties focused on supporting and managing program execution of approximately $12 billion in reconstruction activities for Iraq. “Jim personifies the traits of an LMU graduate: drive, hard work and a passion for impacting the world in a positive way,” said Richard G. Plumb, dean of the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering. “He is a stellar example to all of our students to use their Seaver education as a foundation for lifelong learning.” Crum served 18 years with the Army Corps of Engineers, was on the Senate Appropriations Committee staff that developed the 2002 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill and served on the start-up team of the Office of Homeland Security. He earned his master’s degree in water resources planning and management from Stanford University, with an emphasis on infrastructure issues and knowledge engineering and is a member of the Society of Civil Engineers.
