Get ready to be surprised by dance artists Victoria Chiu and Roland Cox, who perform at Loyola Marymount University on April 20 to celebrate the Lydia Hao Emerging Artists Program.
In the words of the Edmonton (Ontario) Journal, even such readiness won’t prepare you “for the genuinely unexpected virtuoso skill set unleashed” by the Australian dance pair as they perform the “The Ballad of Herbie Cox,” the acclaimed biographical story of their life, love, descendants and ancestors.
The inventive artist duo presents the piece as part of a celebration of dance at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at LMU’s Strub Theatre in the Foley Building on the Westchester campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Herbie Cox “is a tale of emigration, improbable romance, and the cultural cross-hatching that produces exotic blends,” said the reviewer. No small wonder, as it weaves together dance choreographed to music that ranges from Brahms to Marley.
Also performing at the celebration will be Rosalynde LeBlanc Loo, assistant professor of dance at LMU, and Lennon Hobson, a dance major and theatre minor.
The performance, sponsored by the Lydia Hao Emerging Artists Program, is an annual event at the College of Communication and Fine Arts that recognizes emerging artists on campus, as well as emerging national and international artists. The program seeks to forge connections between these artists and enhance teaching and creative work in CFA’s visual and performing arts programs.
Bryant Keith Alexander, dean of CFA, will host the event.
