The West Coast premiere of “Children Without A Shadow,” a stirring documentary about young Holocaust survivors, will be screened for the public on April 7 by the Jewish Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University.
The film is shown in conjunction with the two-day conference of the Western Jewish Studies Association, which takes place April 7-8.
The documentary displays the resilience of the Jewish people through the story of Shaul Harel, a hidden child in Belgium who became a renowned Israeli professor of medicine and physician. The film honors Madame Andree Geulen-Herscovici of Belgium, who rescued 4,000 Jewish children from death at the hands of the Nazis. In 1989, Geulen-Herscovici was recognized by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial as a Righteous Among the Nations – an honor granted to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. She was also granted honorary citizenship by Israel, a rare honor.
The screening and a panel discussion will take place Sunday, April 7 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Hilton 100 Auditorium on the LMU campus, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045. The public is invited.
The panelists, who will discuss the film and answer audience questions, are: Harel, the subject of the documentary; Bernard Balteau, the film’s writer and director, and Anne Griffin, author and professor at Cooper Union in New York City.
