The Hollywood Masters series of in-depth interviews with luminaries from the film industry hosted by Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television will now be available on Netflix.
Hollywood stars and executives in the line-up include: Jake Gyllenhaal, Geena Davis, Sean Penn and Michael Caine. This third series features industry titans: Quincy Jones, Sherry Lansing, Ron Meyer, Charles Roven and Irwin Winkler. The Hollywood Masters series also goes behind the camera to talk with directing and producing talent such as: James L. Brooks, Pedro Almodóvar and Oliver Stone.
The Hollywood Masters host is Stephen Galloway, executive editor for features of The Hollywood Reporter and an Emmy Award-winning journalist. In each episode, Galloway goes beyond the sound bite and delves into the life and career of each Hollywood icon. The Hollywood Masters – Series 3 features a further twelve screen stars, industry captains, and behind-the-scenes talent.
The Hollywood Masters series is a unique production by Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter. The series is filmed in front of a live studio audience in the Mayer Theater on campus by a crew comprised largely of SFTV students and alumni, who complete the production and deliver it to Netflix.

The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 1
Jake Gyllenhaal began his acting career at the age of 11 in City Slickers and has established himself as a versatile on-screen presence best-known for his work in films such as: Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Prisoners, Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals. In this episode, Gyllenhaal talks about his life and influences.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 2
James L. Brooks is an Academy-Award winning director Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and is executive producer of The Simpsons. Brooks helped to create television’s first show to feature an independent working woman, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and went on to co-create the sitcom Taxi. Brooks has been nominated for 47 Emmys, and won 20. Learn more about the man credited with bringing realism to TV comedy and whose influence is still to be seen on our screens.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 3
Sean Penn is the winner of two Oscars for Best Performance (Leading Role) for Mystic River and Milk, and also received a nomination for Dead Man Walking. Penn began his career on Broadway, discovered the film world and was eventually able to direct Jack Nicholson, one of his childhood heroes. The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 4
Geena Davis is an Oscar winner who has appeared in roles that have become cultural landmarks. Davis won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Accidental Tourist and was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in the road movie, Thelma & Louise. Her films include: Tootsie, Beetlejuice and A League of Their Own. Davis’ work in television earned her the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series for her portrayal of the first female President of the United States in ABC’s Commander in Chief. She is the founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the only research-based organization that works to promote gender balance in media and entertainment.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 5
Oliver Stone is an Academy Award-winning writer, director and producer who has crafted some of the most influential and controversial films of the past four decades including: JFK, Natural Born Killers, and Nixon. Stone’s experience with the U.S. Army in Vietnam informed his Oscar winning films Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July. His films also explore a wide range of cultural topics, including Wall Street, The Doors and Any Given Sunday.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 6
Michael Caine is a screen legend with two Oscar wins and credits that include classic films such as The Man Who Would Be King, Get Carter, Educating Rita, and Hannah and Her Sisters. Caine’s recent collaborations with Christopher Nolan have introduced him to modern audiences with the Batman series and Inception.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 7
Quincy Jones currently holds the record for the most Grammy nominations ever received. Jones has scored numerous films, and also produced The Color Purple and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In this episode, the legendary composer and music producer opens up about his experiences working with Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 8
Pedro Almodóvar is an Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer who is successful globally for such films as Talk to Her, All About My Mother, The Skin I Live In, Bad Education and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In this episode, Almodóvar recounts the Franco era in Spain, and other influences on his work, with translation by SFTV Professor Carla Marcantonio.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 9
Sherry Lansing is a legendary producer/executive who headed Paramount Pictures during the studio’s most successful run, producing blockbusters and Oscar winners such as Forest Gump, Braveheart, and Titanic. Lansing was the first woman to run a Hollywood studio. In this episode, Lansing reveals her early struggles and why she walked away from the top job to establish her own foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cancer research, education, art and culture.
The Hollywood Masters, Series 3 – Episode 10
Irwin Winkler is the only producer honored with three films on the American Film Institute’s list of the “Top 100 Films.” As a producer, director and writer he was behind five Best Picture nominations: Rocky, Raging Bull, The Right Stuff, Goodfellas, and The Wolf of Wall Street. He won his first Oscar for producing Rocky, which created a series of highly successful films. Winkler talks to Galloway about making the drama They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and the thriller Point Blank.

Ron Meyer is the Vice Chairman of NBC Universal, and previously served as president and CEO of Universal Studios from 1995-2013. Meyer co-founded Creative Artists Agency, one of the world’s premier talent agencies. Meyer is an industry titan whose credits include: Rocky, Apollo 13, United 93, and Fast7.

Charles Roven is president and co-founder of Atlas Entertainment, best known as a creative force behind a long list of super-hero movies, including: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and the phenomenally successful Wonder Woman.
