The Loyola Marymount University Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering is adding new graduate programs and enhancing existing ones to meet the growing needs in the STEM community for highly qualified professionals with specific skillsets.
“We tailor our graduate programs to meet the needs of working professionals, industry and recent graduates,” said Claire Leon, Ph.D., director of the Systems Engineering and Engineering Management graduate program, and 38-year veteran of the aerospace industry. “Right now, industry’s growth cycle is on an upward swing, and we’ve designed our programs to correspond with that expansion.”
The suite of graduate program offerings spans degrees and certificates in engineering, science and mathematics. Courses are taught in the evenings to accommodate the schedules of working professionals. Taught by both full-time academics and working experts, the programs offer a balance between applied and theoretical knowledge. Small class sizes promote lasting camaraderie among students and ensure close interaction with professors. Research publications or projects conducted in partnership with industry are also encouraged to complete graduate degrees.
To meet the need for increased depth in mathematics and improved teaching skills, the Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics program is expanding to include up to 25 students in fall 2019. In the program, cohorts of secondary teachers take an in-depth look at math in grades K-12 and its connections to graduate-level mathematics, in addition to five education courses. Students typically finish the program in two years. “This program offers a unique learning approach. We’re housed in a mathematics department, so our math is pretty rigorous,” said Anna Bargagliotti, associate professor of mathematics and MAT program director. “Our group is together all the time and we think of it more as a learning community than a program.”
To complement its undergraduate computer science program, a program that boasts strong ties with Google, Amazon and the Los Angeles startup community, Seaver College will relaunch an updated master’s program in computer science this fall. The revamped graduate program will emphasize data science and cybersecurity—areas of heightened need as revealed by market analysis.
The menu of options for certificate programs – three-course programs that can be applied to a master’s degree in the future – continues to move in lock step with industry trends. Seaver’s certificate programs are also a response to business needs to equip employees with specific skill sets.
