The College of Communication and Fine Arts has heard the concerns of students and parents about career planning. In response, CFA is developing two initiatives to help students, seniors in particular, to answer the “what’s next” question.
CFA is sponsoring a series of “Conversations with …” that invites distinguished alumni to campus to talk with CFA students about their careers and how their fine arts degrees helped them achieve success. In November, Kate Micucci, performer, actress and comedian, spoke with a large group of students.
On March 3, in Murphy Recital Hall, Neil Barclay ’76, JD ’87 spoke with students about his career in arts management. He is director and CEO of the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, and is a leading presenter and exhibitor of contemporary art in the United States, an adviser and consultant to national funders and major municipalities, including Los Angeles, and a practitioner with over three decades of professional experience as an arts leader.
In addition, CFA is partnering with The Office of Career and Professional Development to present a workshop that will help give direction to the first months after graduation. “Finding Your Path” will guide students nearing graduation on how to pursue their dreams and still pay their bills.
The workshop will help CFA majors from all departments to develop the skills that will help in the search for employment. Among the topics to be covered are creating an effective resume, developing interview approaches and tricks, and advice on the art of networking. The workshop will be offered as a chance for students to begin building their future with some one-on-one attention.
