Four new members have been appointed to LMU’s Board of Trustees, further expanding the board’s breadth and depth of leadership experience.
“As LMU reimagines and creates the world in which we want to live, our new trustees are bold and innovative leaders who will inspire and guide us,” said President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D. “Their range of perspectives, wisdom, collaborative spirit, and luminous leadership experience will enliven and impel us to achieve our ambitions in the years ahead.”
The new trustees are all alums of the College of Business Administration: Mitch Butier, president and CEO of Avery Dennison Corp.; community leader and philanthropist Michelle Dean; Michael Rue, founder and CEO of retail developer Marketplace Properties; and John Stankey, CEO of WarnerMedia. The trustees were elected to three-year terms, beginning June 1, 2018.
Mitch Butier ’93 is president and CEO of Avery Dennison Corp., a global Fortune 500 company specializing in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of labeling and functional materials. Butier joined Avery Dennison from PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2000, and has held roles of increasing responsibility, including senior vice president and chief financial officer, vice president for global finance, and chief accounting officer. He graduated from LMU with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Michelle X. Dean ’84 has been a community leader in Orange County for the last 20 years. Her activities support organizations that enrich the lives of families and children through education and supporting basic needs. She currently serves on the board of The Wooden Floor and volunteers time doing homeless prevention counseling for Families Forward. She is a founding member of LMU’s Alliance of Women Philanthropists and served as a member of the LMU Board of Regents from 2006-2015. Dean graduated from LMU with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
John T. Stankey ’85 is the CEO of WarnerMedia, one of four distinct business units operating under AT&T, Inc. He is responsible for the company’s media business, which includes HBO, Turner, Warner Bros., and AT&T’s stake in Otter Media. He previously led the integration planning team in support of the AT&T-Time Warner merger, and has served as CEO of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment. Stankey has held a variety of other senior leadership positions at AT&T, including President and CEO – AT&T Business Solutions; President and CEO – AT&T Operations; Group President – Telecom Operations; CTO; and CIO. Stankey earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from LMU and his MBA from UCLA.
Michael M. Rue ’73, JD ’76 is the founder and CEO of Marketplace Properties, a development and investment firm primarily focused on neighborhood shopping centers in California and Denver. He is also the co-founder, along with his sons Casey ’98 and Patrick, of Common Areas, which makes facility and property management software, and The Bruery, a premium craft beer producer. Rue recently concluded 13 years of service as a trustee of Xavier University of Louisiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, and a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School.
