The William H. Hannon Library’s Spring 2019 exhibition from Archives and Special Collections will soon be on display in the Terrance L. Mahan, S.J. Gallery. “Making a Scene: The Process of Stage Design” celebrates the career of Charles E. Erven, professor of Theatre Arts at Loyola Marymount University.
Featuring selections from the recently donated Charles E. Erven Theatre Collection with additional loans from Erven’s personal collection, the exhibition takes us through the creative process of set design from start to finish. “Making a Scene: The Process of Set Design” was curated by Charles Erven, professor of Theatre Arts at Loyola Marymount University, and Lauren Zuchowski Longwell, curator of the Charles E. Erven Theatre Collection. Undergraduate student Jesse Yu created the digital display.
In exploring this exhibition, visitors will learn more about the creative process of designing a final stage that transports actors and audience to a new environment; look at hand drawn elevations and floorplans that were created before the digital era dramatically changed how these materials are created; and find inspiration in the creative process of set design.
Erven has designed over 230 productions and is currently a member and trustee of the Western Region Board of the United Scenic Artists of America Local 829. His work has been seen in multiple venues, both professional and academic, in the United States, Europe, and Central Asia. His work has been exhibited at the Prague Quadrennial and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
The exhibition will run January 18, 2019 through May 10, 2019. The Terrance L. Mahan, S.J. Gallery is open Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and is located on level 3 of the William H. Hannon Library on the campus of Loyola Marymount University. There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on February 7, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. This event is open to the public.
