It is hard to believe that another semester has come and gone! We hope this edition of the newsletter finds everyone doing well and brings back memories of your time at Loyola Marymount University. We have had a great spring semester and recently graduated 54 seniors! They are headed to all parts of the country, ready to study or perform post-graduate service. We have students headed to med school, graduate school to study Public Health, Physician Assistance, Physical Therapy, Nursing, Athletic Training, and Nutrition/Dietetics. The students continue to perform at an extremely high level, with resumes filled with various accomplishments including service hours, internships, job skills that make them extremely competitive for follow-on training.
We had another successful Undergraduate Research Symposium in March. The level of research our students take on is extremely satisfying. Thirteen students presented their posters. Photos from the afternoon are included here. We had several students win awards at the recent awards ceremony: Fiona Shorrock’s (’18) paper titled “Added Sugars and the Childhood Obesity Epidemic in the United States” received honorable mention in the 2018 Undergraduate Library Research Award. Samantha Noble ’19 and Makeen Yasar ’19 were honored with the 2018 Alfred Kilp, SJ, Award for Service and Leadership.
The Academic Program Review continues as we work hard to meet our timelines. We will keep everyone updated as this daunting task continues. Some exciting news for the Department is we will begin the search for an additional tenure-track faculty position this fall. We are excited about growing the Department and look forward to finding a great match to add to our impressive faculty!
Heather Tarleton and Bill McCormack, with a group of students, hosted Preview Day for the Department. This is the day the school is open for those students that have been accepted to LMU and want to learn more about the school as they make the sometimes difficult decision on which college to attend. The students were treated to tours of the labs and in each lab there were question and answer sessions.
We look forward to welcoming the Class of 2022 in August! Orientation will change for this incoming class. They will register for classes online in June following video advising. Orientation will occur over the final few days before classes begin. The First-Year Convocation will be on Friday morning, August 24, followed by college/school luncheons where students, parents, and faculty and staff can interact. The rest of the weekend will include the usual orientation items.
