In a recent KPCC article on the LAUSD Board of Education’s decision to extend Superintendent John Deasy’s contract, Shane P. Martin, dean and professor of the LMU School of Education, offered his endorsement for the district’s iPad initiative. By putting an iPad in the hands of each of the district’s more than 600,000 students – where 80% of students qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program – this technology will serve as a valuable tool for teaching and learning that has the opportunity to close the digital gap between students living in circumstances of poverty and students with more means.
Martin said of the LAUSD Common Core Technology Project, “I think this iPad initiative is one of the boldest, most visionary initiatives I’ve seen for a major school district. It’s a game changer and it puts LAUSD not only at the forefront nationally, but I would say globally.”
