What: Inspiring young men of color to participate vigorously in their own education is the objective of an ongoing series of conferences and initiatives presented by the Los Angeles Unified School District. To ramp up interest, the district has elicited the help of someone who knows about winning. L.A. Clippers coach Doc Rivers will be on hand to address the young men in hopes of inspiring them to do well in school.
The conference will be held November 15 at Loyola Marymount University, a key collaborator on this initiative through the LMU School of Education and the LMU Family of Schools. Young men representing 18 schools district-wide will take part in a rigorous day of learning that includes breakout sessions, peer-to-peer sharing, mentoring and entertainment. Experts from Los Angeles will share insights and strategies designed to motivate, encourage and challenge young men to succeed academically.
The conference is part of a five-part series culminating into the creation of a “village,” participating beyond the conference as mentors to the young men from 25-30 agencies. Agencies have been asked for five to eight volunteers, who would meet monthly with the young men.
