The recently appointed director of the Bioethics Institute at Loyola Marymount University will deliver the annual Bioethics Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the university, setting out the new direction for the institute and its programs.
The lecture is titled “The Ethos of American Bioethics: Between Individual Liberalism and Social Solidarity.” Roberto Dell’Oro, the new director, will discuss how bioethics functions within the complex framework formed by culture, politics, religion and other variables. He will also examine how decisions can be made about controversial issues, from stem cell research to doctor- assisted suicide, when looking for consensus among those with differing viewpoints.
The lecture will include a discussion with two faculty members, Brietta Clark, professor of law at Loyola Law School, and John Parrish, associate professor of political science, as well as comments and questions from the audience.
Dell’Oro, a professor of theological studies, was appointed director this year after a national search. He teaches bioethics, fundamental moral theology, and ethical theories. He has written three books, “Health and Human Flourishing: Religion, Moral Anthropology, and Medicine” (2006), “Esperienza morale e persona” (1996) and “History of Bioethics: International Perspectives” (1996), translated two books from German, and published in national and international journals, such as Theological Studies; Health Progress; Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy; The Journal of Contemporary Health Law and Policy; INTAMS review; Rivista di teologia morale; Vida y Etica.
