Dr. Ronald Keith Barrett
August 17, 1948 – May 31, 2015
On Friday, September 18, the LMU community gathered to remember the life of Dr. Ronald Keith Barrett, professor of psychology at Loyola Marymount University, who died on May 31, 2015. Ron joined the faculty in 1978 and went on to become one of the first African-American faculty members at LMU to achieve tenure. He served as acting department chair of African American Studies from 2004 to 2008, and chaired the Department of Psychology from 2009 to 2014. Below are brief tributes to this beloved member of BCLA family.
“Dr. Ronald Barrett was a mentor to many colleagues and students, a teachers’ teacher, and a deeply committed and highly effective leader on our campus and in communities beyond it. We miss him especially dearly as we begin our new academic year, for the first time in many years, without Prof. Barrett.”
– Dr. Robbin D. Crabtree, Dean, Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts
“Ron was a big-hearted man. He was intensely dedicated to his colleagues, within our psychology department and throughout the larger LMU community, personally valuing them all with the highest regard. We, his colleagues and friends in the psychology department, are grateful for his service and time with us, and we will miss him dearly.”
– Dr. David J. Hardy, Chair, Department of Psychology
“Ron Barrett was, simply put, an excellent human being. He was the kind of professor that all good professors aspire to be: an engaged scholar, an influential teacher, an intellectual resource for the community—in short, a difference maker. It is my prayer that we may be inspired by Ron’s life and become more committed to changing our world as active scholars and citizens, as caring professors and colleagues, and as friends and family.”
– Dr. Brad Elliott Stone, Chair, Department of African American Studies
