Corrina Laughlin recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Communication Studies. Laughlin has worked at LMU College of Communication and Fine Arts since 2019 and is now a proud member of the tenure track faculty.
“During my time at LMU I’ve realized that it is a special place,” says Laughlin. “I’m a native of Southern California and have lived in Los Angeles for 9 years. I love living in LA and working at LMU.”
Laughlin’s scholarship explores how evangelical culture intersects with modern technology. Her award-winning book “Redeem All: How Digital Life is Changing Evangelical Culture” highlights the interplay between digital culture and emerging digital media industries and American evangelical churches and organizations.
Laughlin also explores digital culture through the lens of feminism in her writing. Her works have appeared in Feminist Media Studies, Communication, Culture & Critique, Popular Communication, and various other peer-reviewed journals. She has also written for popular news outlets like The Atlantic and VICE and has debuted video projects at multiple film festivals.
“This has been a great semester,” notes Laughlin. “I’m currently working on my second book project, which focuses on the alt-tech movement and the dangerous flow of misinformation and disinformation in the online ecosystem.”
Laughlin is teaching two classes this semester: Media Studies (CMST 2500), and Sound Studies: The Art of the Podcast (CMST 3555). Media Studies focuses on introducing students to the industry and economy of media, the legacy of British Cultural Studies in media, and the effects of media through audience analysis. Sound Studies: The Art of the Podcast presents the podcast as an artform to be understood culturally, technologically and historically. The course covers sound theories, audio capture and editing, and the process of crafting auditory stories.
