Austin Film Festival recognizes the writer as the heart of the creative process of filmmaking and strives to uncover outstanding, emerging filmmakers; serve as a creative catalyst for legendary, contemporary and rising talent; foster their development through panels, workshops and master classes conducted by professionals; recognize, encourage, and challenge the skills of these new filmmakers and provide outreach opportunities to writers and filmmakers.
Known as “The Writer’s Festival” since its inception 22 years ago, Austin Film Festival celebrates films built on strong storytelling. AFF recognizes the importance of the creator at the core of filmmaking and screens the highest caliber narrative, documentary and animated films — all of which demonstrate the power of a well-told story.
Bottom line: Austin Film Festival combs through its submissions for the best stories. AFF is looking for original and inspiring entries from all over the world, regardless of race, religion, or politics. Do not hesitate to submit a film that may not portray so-called ‘traditional’ characters or life choices. A great story presents a universal truth from a distinctive viewpoint.
We are always on the lookout for new talent and program many World and North American Premieres every year. We’re able to provide a powerful and invaluable platform for these new voices every year and have helped launch the careers of countless filmmakers including Jason Reitman, whose short film In God We Trust premiered at AFF in 2000, and Cary Fukunaga, director of True Detective, whose short film Victoria Para Chino premiered here in 2004.
