Students From the Westside Global Awareness Magnet School participated in the ARTsmart program in early February, visiting LMU for a day of art, fun, and community. Working with volunteer students from the Studio Arts, Art History, and Marital and Family Therapy departments, visiting students enjoyed a variety of activities, which culminated in the creation of a community art exhibit in the Thomas P. Kelly, Jr. Student Art Gallery.
The ARTsmart program brings LMU students together with the underserved middle school students, allowing them to function as art mentors for the program. Through this experience, they gain leadership and collaborative skills, self-confidence, and an understanding of the social justice perspective through their work both on campus and in the school classrooms. The program offers the Westside students access to an enriched arts experience that focuses on collaborative, team-building projects.
Under the direction of ARTsmart Acting Director Amber L. Cromwell, LMFT ATR, a graduate of the Marital and Family Therapy program, the students made bubble art and created beautiful wearable masks. The resulting art exhibit was on view at the Thomas P. Kelly, Jr. Student Art Gallery through February 16th.
