The city of Maywood, CA recently opened the Benito Juarez Park and decided to take an unorthodox approach to building play structures. Instead of the typical plastic structures that are commonplace, the Trust for Public Land commissioned Los Angeles-based mosaic artist Jolino Beserra to create works of art that also served as play sculptures. Using a specialized time-lapse camera rig (dubbed the “Chronomo”), SFTV instructor David Garden documented the artist as he created a dragon sculpture that is the centerpiece of the park, reflecting the Mexican-American heritage of this neighborhood’s residents and the color, whimsy and magical creativity of Oaxacan art.
Watch as Beserra artfully covers a 40-foot long, three-headed dragon with over 150,000 hand cut mosaic tiles to build one of the most amazing children’s play sculptures ever conceived.
