Antonia Darder, the SOE’s Leavey Presidential Chair and Professor of Ethics and Moral Leadership, contributed an opinion piece to the New York Times’ Room for Debate feature on the American way of learning.
Her article, “Disparity in Schools Is Just One Symptom,” appeared in a section along with pieces by Pedro Noguera, Jeb Bush and others.
In response to the question – Should education standards and funding be uniform across the U.S., or should they vary by state? – she writes, “If our goal is to eliminate educational failure, we absolutely must create a system of federal funding to states determined by the actual needs of their people and effectively linked to ameliorating poverty, the only approach that has been shown, time and again, to improve academic achievement.”
