Political science professor Andrew Dilts has been offered membership in the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) School of Social Science for the 2016-17 academic year. This prestigious honor is granted to approximately 20 scholars each year.
Located in Princeton, N.J., the IAS is one of the world’s leading centers for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. The IAS School of Social Science was founded in 1973 and is devoted to a pluralistic and critical approach to social research, from a multidisciplinary and international perspective.
As an IAS member, Dilts will work on a new book project that looks at the inter-relationship between neoliberal human capital theory and the marginalization of race, gender, and sexuality, despite the dominant cultural value of “blindness” to difference. His research will contribute to the Institute’s 2016-17 research theme: “Law and the Social Sciences.”
Dilts’ work as a political theorist centers on the discursive relationships between political membership, subjectivity, sovereignty, and punishment. His recent books include “Active Intolerance: Michel Foucault, the Prisons Information Group, and the Future of Abolition” (co-edited with Perry Zurn, Palgrave, 2015) and “Punishment and Inclusion: Race, Membership, and the Limits of American Liberalism” (Fordham University Press, 2014).
