Carla Rivera, a 2013 graduate of the CAST (Catholic Archdiocesan School Teachers) Program and a teacher at Good Shepherd School in Beverly Hills, was selected as the 2014 recipient of the Archbishop José Gómez Scholarship awarded by the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders. She is the first teacher to receive the scholarship from Archbishop Gómez and CALL.
“The scholarship was a powerful force in assuring that I would continue my career in education,” said Rivera. “When I met with Archbishop Gómez to receive the scholarship it was a very special moment. I was able to express my gratitude for his support both financially and spiritually. He has provided great support to me which will eventually empower and improve learning for the students and teachers of our Catholic schools.”
Rivera has over six years teaching experience and currently teaches Spanish at Good Shepherd School. She earned her master’s degree in education from the LMU School of Education. “LMU taught me how to be the innovative, creative and skillful teacher I am today,” said Rivera. “The CAST program provided great mentoring and teaching strategies that have made me an effective and passionate teacher. LMU provided the foundation of my devotion to Catholic school education and showed the importance of celebrating cultural diversity within school communities.”
The Catholic Association of Latino Leaders supports a variety of projects that promote the Catholic Church and the development of the Latino community. CALL created the Archbishop José Gómez Scholarship to encourage Latino candidates to take on leadership roles in Catholic schools.
