The LMU School of Education proudly presents its 2011 Annual Report – UP: Taking Education to a Higher Level. As the educational landscape continues to change, both here in Los Angeles and across the nation, this publication highlights the impact LMU faculty, students and alumni have on the real world of PreK-12 schools.
This year saw a tremendous rise in our U.S. News ranking, vaulting an unprecedented 45 positions from the previous year, climbing to 86th in the nation. The LMU SOE is creating a new generation of leaders who are challenging the status quo in our schools and making a dramatic impact in the lives of youth.
This fall the LMU Family of Schools welcomed four area Catholic schools into our growing University-community collaborative to join the original seven public schools. Through a holistic, stakeholder-driven approach, the FOS engages the entire LMU campus and surrounding Westchester/Playa community in support of partnerships, professional development, research, and service to promote learning and student success.
Our Center for Math and Science Teaching is at the forefront of a national movement that allows teachers to spearhead the change they know is so urgently needed in K-12 education by staying in the classroom as teacher leaders. CMAST’s hands-on, engaging, and research-driven teaching and learning practices have led to significant gains in student achievement scores in middle and high school math and science.
Through the areas of leadership development, teacher preparation, and research and outreach, the LMU Center for Catholic Education continues to strengthen and support Catholic schools and the students they serve. The recently published Phase 2 report, part of a longitudinal study by the Center, showed that economically disadvantaged Catholic school students in Los Angeles graduated high school and went on to college at substantially higher rates that their public school counterparts.
These are just a few of the many accomplishments by our faculty, staff, programs, and initiatives this year. LMU continually impacts the achievement of students in Los Angeles schools and leads the effort to implement change nationally.
