After working with the Office of Financial Aid and carefully considering detailed application statements, chapter coordinator Maribel Mara presented Reese Garcia with the $1,000 Alpha Sigma Nu Scholarship for 2021-2022.
As part of her service, Reese is a mentor for the Emily Shane Foundation, where she assists underprivileged middle school students raise their grades and complete schoolwork, while teaching organizational skills, encouraging social consciousness, and inspiring students to give back to their communities. In her essay, Reese said this about her mentoring work: “Through this position, I have the opportunity to meet an array of students with different stories. While I teach them algebra or reading comprehension, they teach me how to be a better listener. When a student has a bad day or struggles to grasp a subject, I act as an open ear, so that they can express their needs and goals. We then create a system to achieve those goals together.”
