April marks the ninth year for LMU CARES (Campus Awareness Resource Education Services) to host Sexual Assault Awareness Month programming on campus including the annual Clothesline Project and Denim Day to give voice and empower the campus community. This year includes a new “Let’s Talk” series on various topics and collaborations with the William H. Hannon Library on a book list. Sexual Assault Awareness Month, nationally recognized during the month of April, is represented by a teal ribbon which symbolizes our promise to support survivors. During SAAM, LMU CARES creates ways to address sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking with on-campus and off-campus partners to build a month full of educational and collaborative activities. The educational events for the month include:
“Let’s Talk” series – happening all month, including speakers from on-campus departments and the Rape Treatment Center in Santa Monica who will share about topics around bystander intervention, resources, consent, and restorative justice.
April 18-22
The Clothesline Project – started on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It has become a vehicle for those affected by sexual and/or interpersonal misconduct to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of sexual and interpersonal misconduct. During this week, shirts will be available for students to decorate and hang on the clothesline that will be on the VDA Palm Walk all week.
April 27
Denim Day – is a call for community members to wear denim as a visible means to protest myths surrounding sexual assault in our community. Complete this form and make a donation by Wednesday, April 6, to receive a Denim Day T-shirt to wear with your jeans on this day. All proceeds go to the Rape Treatment Center at the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.
The librarians and staff of the Hannon Library have also curated recommended books for learning more about sexual assault awareness. Want to explore more titles? Check out the full list at LMU Library Staff Picks.
