Earth Day is here.
This year’s global theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is a call to action for people everywhere to use their collective power to hold leaders accountable and demand bold, transformative action to protect our environment. It reminds us that real change starts with us — our choices, our voices, and our commitment to a sustainable future.
Join us for a week of events that reflect this spirit and help build a campus culture rooted in sustainability and conscious living. For full event details and registration info, visit Green LMU’s LEO page and follow @greenlmu on Instagram.
Are you interested in volunteering? We’re especially looking for help on Wednesday, April 23 — reach out to Lucy Renfrow at Lucy.Renfrow@lmu.edu to get involved.
Let’s show what our power can do — for our planet and our community!
Tuesday, April 22:
- Henry David Thoreau Reading: Celebrate Earth Day with us along the bluff — between Sacred Heart Chapel and Xavier Hall — for a full, cover-to-cover public reading of Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden.” That’s right — all 114,634 words. Whether you’d like to read aloud or simply listen, drop by anytime between 8 a.m. and the final word. Stay for a few minutes or a few hours — everyone’s welcome to take part in this tribute to nature and reflection.
Wednesday, April 23:
- L.A. Sanitation Food Drive: Visit the L.A. Sanitation booth during Wellness Wednesday 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and on Lawton Plaza from 2–6 p.m. Meet LASAN staff, explore city career opportunities, and take home a free kitchen compost pail. Don’t forget to drop your food scraps in the labeled compost bins around Alumni Mall to ensure they’re properly composted at the end of the day.
- Earth Day Fest: Celebrate Earth Month with us at this year’s festival on April 23 from 2-6 p.m. at Lawton Plaza. Enjoy sustainability workshops, fun activities, fitness classes, and free vegan meal tickets. Connect with student clubs and organizations as they share their sustainable initiatives on campus and beyond.
- Align in Nature: Unwind with Fitwell and Esperer on O’Malley Lawn from 6–7:30 p.m. for a refreshing Pilates workshop filled with movement, fresh air, and positive vibes.
Thursday, April 24:
- Weigh the Waste: Swing by the table outside The Lair’s dish return from noon-2 p.m. to weigh your leftovers. Help us track how much food is being wasted on campus and raise awareness about food waste. Did you know: In the U.S., up to 40% of food goes uneaten — wasting resources and contributing to climate change.
- The Lorax Movie Night on Sunken Garden: Grab your blankets, snacks, and friends for a cozy, picnic-style screening of “The Lorax” on Sunken Garden from 7–9 p.m. This animated classic is a fun throwback, and a powerful reminder of the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Saturday, April 26:
- Wetland Habitat Restoration: Earth Day Wetlands Restoration: Celebrate Earth Day by getting your hands dirty with Friends of Ballona Wetlands on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. noon. Registration is now closed.
Sunday, April 27:
- Heal the Bay BioBlitz: Join Heal the Bay on Sunday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to noon for the 2025 L.A. City Nature Challenge BioBlitz. This global community science event helps document urban wildlife by recording observations of plants and animals. Meet at Ballona Discovery Park, 13110 Bluff Creek Dr, Los Angeles. Visit Heal the Bay’s website for more event details.
Tuesday, April 29:
- Green Baseball Game: Come cheer on your fellow Lions as they take on UCLA at Page Stadium, starting at 6 p.m. Join us in supporting a low-waste game day by helping us keep the event sustainable and clean.
