The Rights in Systems Enforced (RISE) Clinic at LMU Loyola Law School will host the daylong seminar Crime Victims’ Rights: An Introduction for Legal Professionals Working with Survivors of Violence from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022.
As part of their mission to support and advocate on behalf of survivors of violent crime, RISE attorneys and social workers will foster a discussion on how to support victims of violent crime during the criminal investigation and prosecution of their offender.
“Many victims remain unaware of their rights and are without support to assert and seek enforcement of those rights,” said RISE Director Stephanie Richard, who will co-lead the seminar. “Moreover, survivors from vulnerable communities face additional barriers due to bias and discrimination.”
In this comprehensive eight-hour training, attorneys will learn practical skills on how to help survivors of violent crimes access legal systems on their own terms with the assistance of counsel. Sessions will include Working with Survivors of Trauma Accompanying Crime Survivors to Law Enforcement Interviews, Filing a Notice Appearance in Criminal Court, Refusing Criminal and Civil Discovery, Helping Crime Survivors Access Relief in Administrative, Criminal and Civil Systems, and Assessing Methods of Civil Relief for Crime Survivors. Crime Survivors Service Program Manager Paloma Bustos will partner with Richard in guiding the sessions.
The event will be held at the law firm of K&L Gates, LLP. 10100 Santa Monica Blvd, 8th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90067. Learn more and RSVP.
