Jeffrey L. Wilson, associate professor of philosophy, has been named director of the University Honors Program. Wilson has been involved with Honors for years, having taught the courses “On Human Dignity” and “Society and Its Discontents” in addition to advising numerous Honors theses and reviewing applications to the program.
Wilson earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in philosophy from Emory University and has taught philosophy at LMU since 1995. He has served as the Robert H. Taylor, S.J. chair in philosophy, chair of the University Core Curriculum Committee, vice president of Faculty Senate, associate dean for faculty development in the LMU Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, and various other leadership positions.
Wilson, an expert on Immanuel Kant, Jewish philosophy, and aesthetics, has published many articles and reviews. During his time as the Robert H. Taylor, S.J. chair in philosophy, he developed the ongoing project “Catholic and Jewish Aesthetics: An Encounter.”
A proud first-generation college graduate, Wilson has been a mentor for the First To Go program. He is outspoken about his queer identity and how this experience has served him in his philosophical work and leadership roles. Additionally, his experiences studying and teaching in Germany have given him insight into the international student experience.
Wilson said, “Previous directors have built and developed the LMU Honors Program into one that sets a high standard while distinctively fulfilling the mission of Ignatian higher education. I am energized by the opportunity to bring my own gifts, experience, and passion to maintaining and elevating that standard.”
The Honors Program has been led with compassion and care by Trevor Zink, associate professor of management and sustainability, since May 2020. The university is grateful for his commitment to the Honors Program and its students.
