Dear LMU Colleagues:
I share this news with mixed emotions: Patrick Frontiera, who joined LMU in 2006 and has served as vice president for Information Technology and Business Services since March 2008, will be leaving LMU. Patrick is joining Amazon Web Services as part of their new team focused on higher education business development. His last day at the university is April 8.
Without fear of exaggeration, I can say that Patrick’s able leadership, keen sense of goals and priorities, awareness of where we’ve been and where we need to be, and his good humor, have helped position the university as a technology leader. He was responsible for ensuring the optimal operation and effectiveness of academic technology, administrative computing, infrastructure technology, information security, user support, and business services teams. In addition to his operational responsibilities, Patrick chaired the University Technology Council, served as the primary staff liaison to LMU’s Board of Trustees for technology and cybersecurity matters, and contributed his insights and strategic thinking to many essential university initiatives.
Patrick’s proudest accomplishments are the relationships he formed university-wide, which are reflected in the development of his team members, who he credits for his many achievements. These are only highlights of the remarkable and revealing work of Patrick and our IT colleagues:
- Provided support and enabled the university’s transition to online teaching, research, learning, and working modalities;
- Led the technology build-outs of new construction and renovations, including student residence halls, the William H. Hannon Library, the Bruce Featherston Life Sciences Building, the LMU Playa Vista Campus, St. Robert’s Auditorium, the Drollinger Family Stage, and the Howard B. Fitzpatrick Pavilion;
- Reimagined learning space support and continually assessed user satisfaction, resulting in significantly higher faculty and student reviews and success;
- Created the first ITS Research Services team;
- Partnered with the Provost’s Office to form LMU’s Office of Online Learning;
- Upgraded our academic and enterprise systems, learning management platform, data warehouse, and reporting tools;
- Developed and streamlined our technology infrastructure to create a world-class operation with the capacity to serve the university’s needs for data security, reliability and sustainability;
- Introduced and supported critical collaboration technologies, including Zoom and Microsoft Teams;
- Integrated LMU Loyola Law School’s technology services and offerings to streamline support offerings, systems, and maintenance for efficiency and sustainability;
In 2017, Auxiliary and Business Services were added to Patrick’s portfolio, ensuring that vendor partners such as the bookstore, dining services, and campus digital graphics, along with procurement operations, were centrally coordinated and managed.
A search advisory committee chaired by John Kiralla, senior vice president for Marketing, Communications, and External Relations, will begin a national search for our next vice president for Information Technology. I thank the search committee, listed below, for their willingness to assist me in recruiting Patrick’s successor.
Patrick has been a remarkable colleague in every sense, and we are a better university for his many years with us. I could always rely on Patrick’s wise counsel, unyielding perspectives, and infectious enthusiasm. I will miss Patrick’s creativity, critical thinking, and passion for our work — it has made me a better leader.
Please join me in thanking Patrick for his many contributions and in wishing him continued success in his next chapter.
Sincerely,
Lynne
