LMU School of Education (SOE) is pleased to welcome Sylvia Jauregui, Ed.D. ’21, as director of the LMU Family of Schools. In this role, Dr. Jauregui will work to support ongoing partnerships between LMU and 14 traditional public, public charter, and Catholic Archdiocesan schools in the surrounding Westchester and Playa Vista communities. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Jauregui to LMU School of Education, and pleased that she will advance the ‘fierce urgency of now’ within our Family of Schools engagements,” said interim dean Roosevelt O. Shelton, Ph.D.
Dr. Jauregui is an educational leader and former classroom teacher who is passionate about equity and social justice, and excels at translating complex issues into compelling narratives that drive action. Through her prior experiences, she has successfully led systemic change initiatives by leveraging her policy expertise, research skills, and stakeholder engagement. She is a former senior public policy manager at Subject, an educational technology company, and was previously an assistant director of the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) housed with LMU School of Education.
She received an M.Ed. in educational policy and planning from the University of Texas at Austin and earned her Ed.D. from LMU in educational leadership for social justice. Her award-winning dissertation focused on the experiences of Latina parent leaders in the LCAP decision-making process.
The LMU Family of Schools works toward providing professional development, teacher preparation, resources, and strategic collaboration among schools in the local community. The director works hand in hand with each school to promote community-engaged interdisciplinary research, and to foster authentic, collaborative partnerships linking research, preparation, and practice. “Supporting educators and students in our Family of Schools aligns with our Jesuit and Marymount heritage and the mission of SOE,” said Sashary Zaroyan, associate dean of strategic engagement and initiatives at SOE. “We look forward to advancing the shared vision of LMU and our schools in shaping the educators of tomorrow with Dr. Jauregui as a key member of our team.”
