With the upcoming Thanksgiving break and December winter recess, LMU Campus Safety reminds all bicycle owners to take common precautions when leaving their bikes on campus for an extended period of time.
Tips for Proper Bike Storage
- Store your bicycle in a well-lit, high-traffic area
- Always secure your bike’s frame (not the tire) to a bike rack, using a U-lock
- Register your bike with the Cycling Lion. If your bike is ever stolen, the registration will help expedite its return if located.
- If you see any suspicious activity or experience a bike theft, report it promptly to Campus Safety.
Additionally, the additional hours of darkness during the winter months require further precautions.
Common Safety Tips for Bicycle Riding
- Use both front and rear lights on your bike, for added visibility on the road
- Wear reflective clothing and accessories, to help other drivers see you in the dark
- Inspect brakes and tires before riding
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Avoid distractions while biking, especially during hours of reduced visibility
