SFTV takes full advantage of its prime location in the entertainment capital of the world. Our students benefit from broad industry access to industry-leading companies, learning the art and science of the industry alongside professionals. On March 29, Recording Arts students in Edgar Rothermich’s RECA 470 Senior Capstone class, plus a few 2021 alumni, were treated to a sound mixing demonstration at Disney Studios.
The event was hosted by David Fluhr, rerecording mixer of such films as Encanto, Frozen II, and Ralph Breaks the Internet. Among his other credits, Fluhr is also the father of LMU RECA student Nick Fluhr. Over the course of four hours, Fluhr demonstrated the Dolby Atmos capabilities of Disney’s new Studio E, using a wide variety of clips from recent productions, including the Academy Award winning film Encanto. The event was also a learning experience, as Fluhr tested students on their ability to spot mixing mistakes using some specially prepared clips.
The superb sound capabilities of Studio E provided students with the opportunity to experience groundbreaking technology, further preparing them for their post graduate lives. Fluhr explained and demonstrated what the Dolby Atmos format can do, and what differentiates it from standard surround formats. LMU RECA extends its thanks to all at Disney who helped make this event a success, especially to David Fluhr.
