EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT | LMU will participate in the Great ShakeOut on Thursday Oct. 17, 2019, the annual earthquake preparedness drill practiced by 15 million people worldwide.
At 10:17 a.m. and 6:17 p.m., a public broadcast will announce the start of the drill. All Lions are asked to immediately “drop, cover, and hold on” for one minute, as if an actual earthquake were occurring.
During the Great ShakeOut, you should:
- DROP under the nearest desk, table, or chair.
- COVER your head and neck for protection with one arm.
- HOLD ON to the leg of the furniture with the other arm, until the drill has concluded.
In the event of an actual earthquake, remember that standing in a doorway – as many were taught growing up – is no longer considered an acceptable safety practice.
Earthquake Safety Tips:
- If you do not have furniture to drop under, or if you are outside: move away from tall objects, windows, and power lines. Crouch on the ground with your backside toward glass, and cover your head and neck with your hands.
- Evacuate only if necessary (for example, significant structural damage, fire, chemical or gas leak, etc.). Never use elevators when evacuating.
- Beware of potential aftershocks and falling debris.
Check out Public Safety’s Earthquake Preparedness page (including how to build your emergency kit) for more tips.
After the Great ShakeOut, join Public Safety for QuakeFest, LMU’s annual emergency preparedness fair held in Lawton Plaza from noon – 2 p.m. QuakeFest is the perfect opportunity to meet with community partners like LAPD and LAFD and learn how to plan for any emergency.
In addition to meeting first responders and other exhibitors, all Lions are invited to:
- Buy tacos and churros at the Border Grill food truck
- Snap your photo with Iggy the Lion
- Play games and win prizes
- Pick up free giveaways.
