STUDENT AFFAIRS | Loyola Marymount University’s new dean of students, Terri Mangione, Ph.D., comes to LMU from a fellow Jesuit institution Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she serves as the vice president for student affairs and as the college’s Title IX coordinator. She starts Oct. 8, and replaces Jeanne Ortiz, who will retire this month.
“Dr. Mangione comes to LMU with a great deal of expertise, experience and passion in working with students,” said Lane Bove, senior vice president for student affairs. “We are excited to have such a veteran administrator lead us into new and innovative endeavors for the benefit of LMU students. I believe Dr. Mangione is going to be very successful in our Lion family because she approaches her work with a student-centered, mission driven ethos.”
In her role at Canisius, Mangione oversees the ALANA Student Center – serving African-American, Latino/a, Asian American and Native American students – and the departments of Athletics, Campus Ministry, International Student Programs, Public Safety, Student Counseling Services, Student Health Services and Student Life. She also chairs the Racial Diversity Team. Along with the vice president for academic affairs, she also oversees the Office of Study Abroad and International Partnerships and the Griff Center for Student Engagement.
As LMU’s dean of students, Terri will supervise the Office for International Students and Scholars, Student Health Services, Student Psychological Services, Off-Campus Student Life, Community of Care and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Responsibility. Additionally, she will serve as chair of the Undocumented Students Advisory Committee and Critical Incidents Team, as well as the co-chair of the University Persistence and Graduation Committee. As a liaison to the faculty and academic leadership, Terri will also serve on university committees including the New Faculty Orientation Committee, Honors Advisory Council, University Graduate Council and others.

While I will miss the Golden Griffins of Canisius, I am very excited to begin serving and supporting LMU students and cannot wait to become a Lion.”
Mangione began her career at Canisius in 1986 as a financial aid counselor and served in several different roles, the last being the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She left Canisius in 1999 for positions at the University of Tennessee and the University of Buffalo, before returning in 2007 as dean of students. She was promoted to vice president for student affairs in 2013. Mangione earned her Ph.D. in the social foundations of higher education from the University at Buffalo, and holds an M.S. in college student development from Alfred University, and a B.A. in applied clinical psychology.
