The Lion on the Street series produced by the Marketing, Communications, and External Relations’ social media team has won gold in this year’s annual UCDA Design Awards, for the Video in a Social Media Campaign category.
Launched in October 2022, Lion on the Street is a student-led, student-created series where a host asks fellow Lions fun questions each month. The series airs on LMU’s Instagram and TikTok channels.

“Lion on the Street resonates with our audiences because it’s so authentic,” said Shelbey Galliher, social media manager. “We hear from prospective families that Lion on the Street impacted their decision to choose LMU because of its fun, welcoming tone.”
Theatre arts major Chase Gray ’23 was the 2022-23 student host and culminated his year hosting a live Lion on the Street at LMU’s 111th Commencement that aired on the jumbotron before the ceremony.
The University and College Designers Association judges evaluated 733 entries, awarding 146 awards — 12 Gold Awards, 21 Silver Awards, and 113 Awards of Excellence. A complete list of winners can be found here (LMU is on page 21).
The UCDA Design Awards recognize the best design and creative work done by communication professionals to promote educational institutions, and are judged by a hand-picked panel of peer jurors composed of designers, design educators, photographers, and illustrators working in educational institutions.
LMU’s entry will be featured at the UCDA Design Awards Show, celebrated at the UCDA Design Conference in Atlanta in October.
Marketing, Communications, and External Relations student-worker Benedict McGrath ’24 produced the series with Galliher, and videography work-study student Justin Whittingham ’23 filmed the videos. Yoshikazu Ysa, LMU video production associate, edited the series. The LMU social media team is recruiting for a new student host for the upcoming year.
