Since our founding in 1957 at Loyola Marymount University, KXLU 88.9FM has been a platform for the unheard to be heard in Los Angeles. In this moment of national outrage, we remain steadfast in advancing a mission of inclusivity, diversity, and of uplifting those who are underrepresented.
Within music, the black community has been instrumental in the creation of musical styles and genres, such as rock ’n’ roll, blues, jazz, soul, gospel, R&B, funk, hip hop, house, rap, reggae, and so many more. Our station and the history of music as a whole is indebted to black musicians, artists, and creatives who have shaped what we all listen to today.
LMU’s KXLU stands in solidarity with our campus community and with people across our nation who call for justice, change, and equity. We condemn the violence that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others before them. We stand with this fight for justice, but it doesn’t stop here. Long after the streets clear, it’s imperative to continue to promote black musicians, book black artists, and continue to do the work that we all have the responsibility to do within our respective communities.
We encourage you to seek resources that educate and support the mission of underrepresented communities and to make a commitment to doing this important work within your means. The following list represents a few organizations you may wish to consider supporting, but, again, it certainly doesn’t stop here. Dive into your communities, take action, educate yourself, and elevate.
