ATHLETICS | Day of Giving is upon us and LMU Athletics asks you to take part in One LMU Drive. The fundraising initiative calls upon the entire Lions community to make an impact that will transform the future for generations of Lions. The university’s future is shaped gift by gift, no matter the amount. An investment in LMU Athletics has unlimited potential. Lions Athletic Fund, the annual giving program of LMU Athletics, aims to raise over $100,000 on Day of Giving in 2019. A university-wide initiative, Day of Giving provides an opportunity to support the Lions on and off the field, while showing the impact athletics has upon the LMU community.
The Lions are headed to the postseason. The men’s basketball team has been invited to continue their memorable season in the 2019 Roman College Basketball Invitational. LMU (20-11, 8-8 WCC) has an opportunity to add to their 20-win season beginning Wednesday in Riverside with a first-round matchup against California Baptist University (16-14, 7-9 WAC). Tickets are currently available through CBU on their website.
The women’s basketball selection shows are slated for Monday night. LMU will be watching to see if they, too, will extend their season.
How sweep it is. The baseball team opened West Coast Conference play with a home sweep over conference foe, Santa Clara. The series opened with an 18-inning marathon, ending in an LMU walk-off. On Saturday, the Lions walked off once again, scoring a run in each of the final two innings to win it in the bottom of the ninth. The sweep was completed on Sunday, as LMU wore their St. Patrick’s Day green caps en route to a 7-3 victory. The home stand continues Tuesday with a game against San Diego State before WCC opponent Pacific visits Page Stadium for three over the weekend.
The women’s water polo team also took care of the competition over the weekend at the 18th annual LMU Invitational. The 12th-ranked Lions won all four of their games with two wins on Friday and two wins on Saturday. With the nonconference portion of the schedule completed, LMU will now play GCC matches the remainder of the season. Conference play begins at home on Friday at 4 p.m. with a game against San Diego State and a noon game on Saturday against Azusa Pacific, both at Burns Aquatics Center.
Softball kicked off their full week with a Tuesday sweep of their own over Boston University, winning a pair of one-run games. The Lions then posted a winning record over the weekend at the LMU Tournament with a Thursday split, a win over Cal Poly on Friday, and concluding the weekend with a Sunday shutout over Dartmouth. The Lions are back at home five times during the coming week with Boise State and Harvard coming to Smith Field on Tuesday and then Cal State Fullerton playing a Thursday/Friday series.
LMU women’s tennis team remains unbeaten at home with a 4-0 sweep of Marquette on Monday. The Lions are back at home for two this week, a nonconference matchup with Cincinnati at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and the start of WCC play with Pepperdine coming to the LMU Tennis Center Saturday at 11 a.m.
After a weekend in Texas, LMU men’s tennis team is home for one more nonconference match this Wednesday against Nebraska at 1 p.m. WCC play begins on the road Saturday in Malibu as the Lions take on Pepperdine at 2 p.m.
Nineteen members of the Lions men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Saturday at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic, hosted by UC Irvine. Both the men’s and women’s teams combined for five career bests, several season bests and a couple of heat winners. The track and field team will send 28 student-athletes to San Diego on Friday to compete in the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational hosted by SDSU.
Despite only competing with four players for the final round, Loyola Marymount men’s golf moved up to seventh in the Olympic Club Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Lions shot 294-293-292—879 to improve by a stroke each round and finish tied for the fourth lowest Round 3 score and placed seventh overall. This next week LMU will compete at the Duck Invitational in Oregon on March 25-26.
