MISSION AND MINISTRY | “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication” (Psalm 130:1). Prayer has many voices: praise and petition, thanksgiving and confession. In the midst of violence and injustice, prayer also becomes lament.

The Liturgy of Lament begins Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of Sacred Heart Chapel.
The prayer of lament has long been part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. In the wake of the on-going scandal, violence and betrayals wrought by the clergy sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church, the Department of Theological Studies and the Office of Campus Ministry have come together to create a Liturgy of Lament for the members of university community to our lamentations to God in prayer.
When faced with the abhorrent evils of sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults, where can we go? To whom can we turn? How do we respond? The Liturgy of Lament offers our community an opportunity to turn to God in prayer, for only God can provide the needed hope that good triumphs over evil, that justice will prevail, and that the future Church will be different.
