Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that Russell Mayer, Ph.D., has joined Loyola Marymount University as interim assistant vice provost for educational effectiveness and assessment and LMU’s WSCUC accreditation liaison officer, effective April 25, 2023. Joining the Provost’s Office on a two-year appointment, AVP Mayer comes to us from St. Joseph’s College in Maine, where he served as interim vice president and chief learning officer.

Over the past 25 years, AVP Mayer has served several Catholic colleges and universities, including Merrimack College and Marian University. In addition to scholarly accomplishments and his many successes in the classroom, AVP Mayer has led a variety of campus initiatives as provost, vice president for institutional effectiveness and strategic initiatives, Faculty Senate president, vice provost, associate dean of liberal arts, chair of the Institutional Review Board, and department chair. He has also received appointments as an American Council on Education Fellow at Salem State University and as a Research Fellow at the Harvard University-MIT Data Center.
Alongside John Parrish, LMU’s vice president for institutional strategy, AVP Mayer will co-chair the WSCUC Steering Committee as well as lead the Assessment Advisory Committee, among other responsibilities. AVP Mayer previously served as the assessment liaison officer at two institutions and served as primary author of successful 10-year reaffirmation self-study accreditation documents. In these roles, AVP Mayer led efforts to engage the in data-driven decision making. All of us at LMU will benefit greatly from his experience and expertise; we are gaining a steady hand and collaborative partner as we continue to position ourselves very well navigating the reaffirmation process for WSCUC accreditation.
AVP Mayer is a political scientist, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan. His teaching and research have focused on mass political behavior, research methods, public policy, civic engagement, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. His recent book on the regulation of internet gambling was published by Lexington Books (Rowman & Littlefield).
Please welcome Russ to LMU and to his key role in our institution.
Sincerely,
David Alan Sapp, Ph.D.
