A record of more than 21,000 first-year student applications to Loyola Marymount University for the fall 2022 semester resulted from focused and creative recruiting efforts led by the LMU admission team, and sustained engagement by deans and faculty members, among other factors.
This represents a 15 percent increase over 2021, and a 36 percent increase from 2017, highlighting an application growth trend over the past several years, that has withstood even an international pandemic.
“In following with LMU’s Jesuit heritage, our commitment to academic excellence and the education of the whole person make the university a top choice to prospective students year after year,” said Maureen Weatherall, vice provost for Enrollment Management. “Our undergraduate outcomes are just one indicator of the success of our approach: 93 percent of LMU’s class of 2021 reported having at least one internship while attending LMU and 97 percent reported a successful outcome of employment, graduate school, or service within six months of graduation.”
The growth is also reflected in 14 percent more applications among underrepresented students and a 20 percent rise among international students. Applications were received from all 50 states, led by California, Washington, Illinois, Texas, and New York; and more than 130 countries, led by India, China, Brazil, Kuwait, and Pakistan.
In addition to dean and faculty engagement, and focused recruiting efforts, other factors cited by Enrollment Management that contributed to the rise in applications include LMU’s rising profile as a national, high-research university; removing a barrier by going SAT/ACT optional; and engaging primarily with online events that allow much broader access.
