Anthropic’s Mythos AI model has been getting a lot of attention in the mainstream media, and there is a good reason why.
Mythos is Anthropic’s most powerful AI model ever built, and what sets it apart is its extraordinary cybersecurity capabilities. During testing, it uncovered thousands of previously unknown software vulnerabilities across every major operating system and web browser, many of which had gone undetected for decades.
Anthropic has responded proactively with Project Glasswing, an initiative that partners with the world’s most prominent financial and technology companies to use Mythos defensively to help secure critical software. However, they’ve been clear that the transition period will be turbulent. The threat landscape is evolving rapidly, and it is only a matter of time before this tool is exploited by malicious actors to breach systems and inflict significant damage.
At a time when cyber vulnerabilities can be found and exploited at lightning speed, LMU Information Technology Services (ITS) shares a few tips to protect yourself:
Update and Strengthen Your Passwords, and Use Multi-Factor Authentication
If you are still using simple, reused, or old passwords, now is the time to change them. Use a password manager to generate long, unique passwords for every account.
As a rule of thumb: 16+ characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols. In addition, enable Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible to add an extra layer of protection.
Set Up Passkeys Where Available
Passkeys are the next generation of account security, replacing passwords entirely with cryptographic authentication tied to your device. Major platforms, including Google, Apple, Microsoft, and many others, now support them.
Enable passkeys on any account that offers them, as they are significantly harder to phish or steal than traditional passwords.
Harden Your Home Devices
Your home network is an extension of LMU’s security posture. To continue your protection at home:
- Update the firmware on your home router
- Change any default device passwords
- Ensure your devices (computers, phones, tablets) have automatic updates turned on
- Review what devices are connected to your home Wi-Fi and remove anything unfamiliar
Prepare for Increased Security Patches
Because Mythos has already uncovered thousands of critical vulnerabilities across operating systems and browsers — many of which are being responsibly disclosed to vendors — expect a significant increase in security patches and software updates in the coming weeks and months.
Do not delay or dismiss these updates, as they are more critical than usual. Install them promptly on all your devices, including computers, phones, and tablets.
The cybersecurity landscape is shifting rapidly, and awareness is your first line of defense. For more information and tips, visit the ITS Information Security webpage.
