Hundreds of students, alumni, faculty and staff from Loyola Marymount University will take part Saturday in the “Centennial Day of Service” to mark the university’s 100-year commitment to Los Angeles.
The service day comes as LMU winds up its centennial year celebration. There will be events across Los Angeles where LMU people will feed the hungry, stock food pantry shelves and grocery bags, as well as improve several community parks, including Discovery Park at Ballona Wetlands.
Service to others is an essential element of LMU’s mission, and every year members of the university’s student body, faculty and alumni volunteer hundreds of thousands of hours to nonprofit organizations around Los Angeles.
Key projects this Saturday include:
• Ballona Discovery Park improvement – Install two dozen bird boxes for tree swallow research, plant a rock garden and a garden of native plant species, take part in a class on Tongva history and traditions. (Good exteriors, springtime visuals for TV and photos.)
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; West Bluff Creek Drive, Westchester.
• Midnight Mission service – Serve midday meal and distribute toiletries to the homeless and needy on Skid Row. (TV and photography of outdoor meal service and dining.)
10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; 601 San Pedro St., Los Angeles.
• St. Joseph Center food pantry – Clean and stock the food pantry while filling grocery bags for distribution to the needy. (TV and photography of indoor events.)
10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; 204 Hampton Drive, Venice.
LMU students actively engage with the community as part of the university’s mission to encourage learning, educate the whole person, and engage in the service of faith and the promotion of justice.
