Loyola Marymount University and West Los Angeles College today signed an agreement that will enable community college students to receive guaranteed admission to LMU’s College of Business Administration after meeting specific GPA and unit requirements.
The LMU-WLAC Business Scholars Program provides a new path for West students wishing to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration from LMU. It builds on LMU’s existing transfer admissions pact with the nine-campus Los Angeles Community College District – which includes West – and furthers the university’s commitment to making an LMU education accessible to community college students, and to helping them succeed.
“LMU is proud of its commitments with West and other Los Angeles-area community colleges, which serve talented students from diverse backgrounds who bring new perspectives to LMU,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Thomas Poon. “We look forward to welcoming the first cohort of LMU-WLAC Business Scholars as LMU Lions.”
Leaders from both institutions formalized the agreement at today’s Los Angeles Community College District board meeting in Culver City.
“West Los Angeles College is proud to partner with Loyola Marymount University in providing a pathway for high schools to move toward attainment of their bachelor’s degree,” said WLAC President James M. Limbaugh. “Through this partnership, students will have the benefit of an education from two outstanding institutions that are dedicated to academic quality and the success of every student.”
LMU enrolls roughly 550 transfer students each year, two-thirds of whom come from community colleges. While the university has transfer admissions agreements in place with districts representing 25 community colleges, the Business Scholars Program is a first.
“The demand for business majors will always be high and this program provides a unique opportunity for students to continue their education at a top-ranked business school,” said Dayle M. Smith, dean of LMU’s College of Business Administration. “We take pride in the diversity of our students and will continue to look for strategic partnerships that support the development of tomorrow’s global business leaders.”
Business scholars will receive personalized counseling support and also have access to LMU facilities and activities, including career expos, workshops and coaches, athletics events and more. Students are eligible if they complete requirements for an Associate in Science for Transfer degree from West: maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA; earn certain course minimum grades; and maintain full-time enrollment status of 12 units or more per fall/spring semester.
