Teachers working in bilingual or dual-language immersion programs, as well as Spanish speakers and parents who want to promote the use of Spanish in their families and communities, will gather at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday, Jan. 26, for a one-day institute, “Literacy in the 21st Century.”
The session, which will be conducted in Spanish, will be held in Ahmanson Auditorium in University Hall, beginning at 8 a.m. Special introductions will be given by Shane P. Martin, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education, and Magaly Lavadenz, director of the Center for Equity for English Learners.
The keynote speakers will be author, researcher and educator Alma Flor Ada, Ph.D., professor emerita at the University of San Francisco, and F. Isabel Campoy, Ph.D., poet, playwright, songwriter and storyteller.
This unique event will give participants the opportunity to listen and dialogue in Spanish in an academic context. Sessions will include “Spanish Writing Development,” “Common Core Curriculum en Español” and “Heritage Spanish Language Programs.”
This event is co-sponsored by the LMU School of Education’s Office of the Dean and the Center for Equity for English Learners, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the California Association for Bilingual Education.
