Los Angeles professional soccer team Chivas USA has formed a partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles to give $50,000 for need-based scholarships for Mexican and Mexican-American students at Loyola Marymount University this year.
The new Chivas USA/IME Becas Scholarship Fund is a joint venture between the team’s nonprofit foundation, Fundación Chivas de Corazon, which is donating $25,000, and the Mexican government’s IME Becas program, which is donating $25,000 in matching funds. The IME Becas program is a government fund that provides money to Mexican citizens and their descendants to attend colleges and universities abroad.
Alicia Mendoza, senior manager of Business Development for Chivas USA, said that starting this year, the team will donate a minimum of $25,000 from the proceeds of its annual golf tournament to provide scholarships at selected colleges and universities.
This is also the first year of a multi-year commitment between Chivas USA and the consulate to provide scholarship money for deserving students.
The Chivas USA’s 6th annual Charity Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 22at the Rancho Park Los Angeles Golf Club.
