Loyola Marymount University will honor Zubin Mehta, world-famous orchestra conductor, with the 2006-07 Navin and Pratima Doshi Bridgebuilder Award on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The LMU Consort Singers, World Music Ensemble, and solo artists will perform in his honor, followed by brief remarks by Mehta.
These performances are free and open to the public and will be held in Murphy Recital Hall at 2 p.m. Seating is first come, first serve. However, reserved seating is available for those who attend the luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are $50 per person. RSVP online at www.lmu.edu/extension/religion, email events@lmu.edu, or call (310) 338-5278.
The Navin and Pratima Doshi Bridgebuilder Award, created through the generosity of the Doshi family, honors an individual or organization dedicated to fostering understanding between cultures, peoples and disciplines.
Zubin Mehta has served as music director to the world’s most prestigious orchestras including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (1961 – 1967), the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1962 – 1978), the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, that named him Music Director for Life, and the New York Philharmonic, where his 13-year tenure is the longest in the orchestra’s history. Currently, he is serving as music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
Mehta has fostered cultural dialogue through his performances by, for example, bringing together for the first time the Israel Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra for a historic concert in 1999 in what had been a concentration camp.
Mehta has performed at the ruins of the Bosnian National Library in war-torn Sarajevo, in Tel Aviv during the Gulf War, in Moscow’s Gorky Park during the Soviet era, and in India where his Israeli musicians broke a decades-long absence of cultural dialogue and diplomatic ties.
This event is hosted by LMU’s Center for Religion and Spirituality in LMU Extension.
