LMU Comedians Advance to National Competition

How funny is LMU? Pretty funny, according to the Internet.

A team of students from Loyola Marymount has emerged as a final contender in the 2010 National College Comedy Competition, put on by Rooftop Comedy and cable network TBS.

The students will represent LMU at the Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival June 9-13 and compete against comedians from three other schools: Emerson College, the University of Florida and Xavier University.

The “Funniest Four” emerged from a field of 32 after weeks of online performances and voting by Internet users. Starting out in the West bracket, LMU defeated USC at an April performance at the Hollywood Improv. LMU’s comedians later eliminated San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley in head-to-head competition.

The winning team will be declared the top college comedy group in the nation, and individual competitors from the four final teams are eligible to be chosen for participation at the National Student Finals in Chicago, June 15-19.

“For the four young comics chosen to perform at our festival in Chicago, it will be the opportunity of a lifetime as they pursue their comedy dreams in the city that has been the proving ground for some of America’s greatest comedians,” said Dennis Adamovich, senior vice president of brand and digital activation for TBS.

In the most recent round against UC Berkeley, LMU seniors Jordan Bull, Joey Greer and Abby Pierce, and junior Cody Kopp crafted a video special that slammed their rival’s hippie reputation, while surviving jabs such as “LMU? More like LM-Who?”

On Thursday, LMU’s team will put on a three-minute performance before a live audience at the Aspen festival, followed by another team of college comedians for the chance to advance to the final round on Saturday. More information is online here.
