Message from the President
March 13, 2013
Dear LMU Community:
It is with profound happiness that we welcome the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the next Bishop of Rome and Pope to the more than 1.2 billion Roman Catholics around the globe. Of course, that he was ordained and served as a Jesuit has special resonance with the LMU community.
He has had a remarkable, faithful career in Argentina, where he has shown himself to be a thoughtful, humble and devout leader and servant. Truth, caring and sacrifice have marked his life, and his knowledge of Catholic theology and history bodes well for the Church and the world community.
We offer our prayer and support to Pope Francis. The challenges he faces are multiple and complex. We recall, too, with thanks and reverence the work of his predecessor, Benedict XVI. We celebrate the careful deliberations of the College of Cardinals and we enter this chapter in the history of the church with optimism and confidence.
Sincerely,
David W. Burcham
President
