Alexander has held key administrative jobs at Cal State L.A., including associate dean, interim dean of the College of Arts and Letters, as well as acting chair of the Liberal Studies Department.
“I am delighted that Bryant Alexander is the new dean of LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts,” said Joseph B. Hellige, executive vice president and provost. “He brings scholarly work that encompasses both communication studies and the performance aspects of art, a vision of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the administrative experience to move the college in exciting directions by working with faculty and staff to craft the next college strategic plan.”
Alexander was chosen to head CFA after a nationwide search to fill the position, which is being vacated by Barbara Busse at the end of June. She has served as dean since 2002.
Prior to joining the faculty at Cal State in 1998, Alexander taught at Texas A&M University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
He earned his Ph.D. in speech communication with emphases in performance and pedagogical studies from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in interpersonal and public communication from what is now the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.
In his academic and administrative career, Alexander has promoted race, culture and gender diversity; supported issues of equality and social justice; been committed to student and faculty engaged decision-making, as well as critical and democratic pedagogy; and supported interdisciplinary studies across departments and colleges.
